Students ‘Support our Troops’

On Rota, community members will join the students in a candlelight vigil.

On Saipan, students will display yellow ribbons, banners and placards to express their appreciation for the troops.

The Support our Troops program is in line with the Armed Forces Day celebration on May 16.

Education Commissioner Rita Sablan said the Public School System wants to recognize the efforts of CNMI servicemembers who are also parents of students.

Dandan Elementary School principal Jonas Barcinas, the PSS youth advisory panel advisor, said they distributed the yellow ribbons to all schools in yesterday.

“We like to let the community know that we support and appreciate our troops,” Barcinas said.

Francine Babauta, the student representative on the Board of Education and PSS youth advisory panel executive leader, said they wanted to have a week-long celebration, but there were other school activities scheduled for this week.

Babauta said they will hold a week-long celebration with more activities next year.

Like Saipan Southern High School where she is a student, Babauta is confident other schools will completely support the program.

“We want to show our appreciation to the family of the men and women in uniform,” she said.

A recent SSHS graduate, Bethany Maratita, has joined the military and is now in Iraq.

Another former SSHS student, Gus Norita, is also in active military duty, Babauta said.
