THE supervised release of John K. Cabrera was transferred to the District Court for the NMI from the Eastern District Court of California on Wednesday.

According to the transfer order signed by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr., “The person under supervision has developed and/or established familial ties, prosocial support systems, employment, and housing in the District of Northern Mariana Islands. Therefore, it is recommended that jurisdiction be transferred to the District of Northern Mariana Islands to allow the District of Northern Mariana Islands to continue to aid the person under supervision in a successful term of Supervised Release/Probation.”

The transfer of jurisdiction was accepted by District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona.

Cabrera, 42, was sentenced on Jan. 6, 2017, to a prison term of 87 months or six years and nine months. Upon serving his sentence, Cabrera will be placed on 300 months or 25 years of supervised release. His supervised release will end on Oct. 6, 2046.

Court documents stated that between April 24, 2014, and April 27, 2014, Cabrera used the internet to transmit images of prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct with another person.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, this case was the product of an investigation by the Sacramento Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a federally and state-funded task force managed by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department with agents from federal, state, and local agencies.

The Sacramento task force investigates online child exploitation crimes, including child pornography, enticement, and sex trafficking.
