Cruz, in a letter, is urging U.S. Environmental Protection Agency oil program official Peter Reich to immediately investigate the matter.
Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr., in an e-mail, said the issue is one of the important justifications for the governor’s extension of the emergency declaration for CUC.
He said the administration appreciates Cruz’s environmental concerns and is now working to address the issue in the best way possible “preferably with strong federal support and assistance.”
Despite very limited resources, Reyes said the administration is “doing everything in its power to address the situation, along with efforts in rehabilitating the power plants and the other pressing issues outlined in the executive order.”
The oil spill threat from CUC’s Tank 104 was discussed by the administration with CUC officials in 2007 when EPA officials visited the power plant.
Cruz said he raised the same concern last year and told Reich that the administration downplayed his report.
