Taxi drivers want to provide better service to passengers with disabilities

On Oct. 23, 25 taxi drivers will undergo a workshop on how to deal with emergency situations involving persons with disabilities.

Rabby Syed, the taxi association president, said the Northern Marianas Protection & Advocacy Systems Inc. will conduct the workshop from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

NMPASI is a non-profit organization that aims to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities through legally based advocacy, representation and support.

“I believe this training and educational program will help enhance taxi service in the community,” Syed said.

He said taxi drivers need to be trained because “persons with disabilities are special and we want to serve them with utmost care and safety.”

Syed said their services will also supplement the Call-A-Ride program for persons with disabilities, adding that residents with disabilities should have more transportation options.

Those who are not member of the Saipan City Taxi Association are also invited to participate in the workshop.

They can call 287-7368 for more details and information.

This will be the first workshop for taxi drivers regarding a specific application, Syed said.

He hopes NMPASI will hold more training sessions in the future.
