Taxi groups offer discounted fare

The Saipan City Taxi Association president said the two taxi groups operating on Saipan are giving the elderly and persons with disabilities discounted fares.

The parents or guardians of the person with disabilities can also avail of the 50 percent discount, he added.

The regular flag down rate is $2.50 and 75 cents for the succeeding quarter mile

Syed said the special rate will encourage commuters to patronize legitimate taxi operators.

“This is affordable to the community and will also help people in the economic crisis,” he said.

The Saipan City Taxi Association can be reached through telephone no. 285-3306.

The special promo rate will continue until further announcement, Syed said.

Edwin Pangelinan, president of the newly organized NMI Taxi Association Inc., said they have been extending discounted fare to local residents since they formed the group in Nov. 2009.

“We want to make sure that we deliver services to the local community,” he added.

The group of Pangelinan operates at hotels while Syed’s is based at Duty Free Shop in Garapan.

Pangelinan said they are hoping that their special fare will discourage residents from patronizing illegal taxis, which charge a flat rate of $3 to $5.
