Rep. Ramon A. Tebuteb, R-Saipan, said MPLT Chairman Alvaro Santos should explain why MPLT is building a new office amid the islands’ worsening economic crisis.
The lawmaker specifically asked for communications detailing the determination of a site for the MPLT office building, the purchase or lease of real property, requests for proposals for construction, invitation for bids for construction, construction contracts, among other matters.
“Second, I would like to request that MPLT submit an explanation to the House Standing Committee on Natural Resources its decision to site and construct the new office building. This explanation should include a description of the board’s selection process and any alternative options that were discussed by the board,” Tebuteb said in his letter to Alvaro.
MPLT, an autonomous agency in charge of investing proceeds from public land leases, reported its earnings for fiscal year 2007 went up by 52 percent to $8.4 million.
Overall, its assets for the period also grew by 12.2 percent to $77 million from $68.4 million the previous fiscal year.
MPLT has moved its office from the Retirement Fund Building on Capital Hill to the privately owned Morgen Building along Beach Road in San Jose.
