Tenorio, Covenant-Saipan, noted that a China-based company recently installed solar-wind-powered streetlights at the multi-purpose center, and he believes that such technology won’t cost the government as much as the power delivered through the controversial poles erected in Marpi.
The former governor said he “doesn’t understand” why the government has to install lights at the cemetery, but he will help find a more acceptable way of doing so.
Tenorio said he may appropriate $50,000 for solar-wind powered streetlights.
This will be the cost of installing the equipment and the government will not have to pay a monthly Commonwealth Utilities Corp. bill he added.
Friends of Marpi and other residents have opposed the erection of power poles in the area, saying they will mar the natural beauty of the tourist site.
They favor alternative ways to provide power to the area.
