The second lecture will be held in the American Memorial Park Auditorium on July 14, at 6 p.m. Professor Robert J. Desiderio of the University of New Mexico will lecture on business ethics and public expectations of the business community’s role in society.  The lecture will examine current business practices, and what lessons we have (or should have) learned from the “great recession” currently unfolding.

The third lecture will be presented by  Desiderio in the Hillblom Library at the Guma’ Hustisia on Thursday, July 15, at 11:30 a.m. Desiderio will examine business ethics issues in a broader historical context. Starting with the 20th century and the “robber baron” era, he will examine the public’s opinion of whether large corporate businesses have a broader role in society than merely maximizing profits.

Concluding the series,  Villazor and  Desiderio will conduct a seminar on the United States Constitution for Public School System teachers and interested members of the public and legal community. This discussion will be held July 16, 2010 at 12 noon in the Hillblom Library at the Guma’ Hustisia in Susupe.  Principal questions to the understanding of the constitutions will be addressed and the CNMI and U.S. Constitutions will be compared.

The third and fourth events originating in the Hillblom Library will be linked for teleconferencing to the NMC sites on both Rota and Tinian. Teachers, government employees and the general public are invited to attend. Amanda Allen, Northern Marianas College information technology department distance learning coordinator, has been responsible for pulling together these two teleconferences through ANA NMC Project Connect and along with Board of Education Chairwoman Lucy Banco-Maratita has helped to develop interest in the teleconferences on both islands.

The Law and the Community lecture series is presented by the Northern Marianas Judiciary Historical Society and the CNMI Judiciary, with funding support from the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities. The lecture series goal is to introduce the commonwealth community to several timely legal topics that stimulate critical thinking, increase discussion, and result in a better informed community capable of reaching practical solutions to its challenges.
