Salas earlier denied that he extorted money from a business owner.
Salas, who was released on his own recognizance, is being represented by court-appointed defense attorney David Banes, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O’Malley is prosecuting the case.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Salas on Sept. 14, 2010 after he received $200 from an owner of a printing press “in exchange for withholding administrative functions” such as imposing fines for building code violations.
