Three Hopwood events on one day

Hopwood also held a health walkathon and Family Fun Night on the same day.

About 40 guest speakers discussed their careers and professions with the students, Patty Mendoza, the school counselor, said.

Guest speakers discussed the nature of their work, how it serves the community, and the required training and education to become an effective worker.

During the forum, students asked guest speakers about their way of life and their families.

The guest speakers included lawyers, social workers, an information technologist, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, a Coast Guard officer, a guidance counselor, an educator, and artists.

Last year, there were 59 guest speakers that participated in the school’s Career Day.

Prior to this year’s event, Mendoza said students were asked about their career interests.

Based on the students’ answers, the school identified the career professionals that could talk with the students.

“The guest speakers were very appreciative because the students asked them relevant questions about their work,” Mendoza said.

Christine Masga, Hopwood Junior High School principal, said Career Day was observed with their health walkathon to emphasize that in choosing their careers students should also maintain healthy lifestyles to ensure their success.

Masga said everybody in the school participated in the day’s events which were capped by Family Fun Night.

Family Fun Night, which was held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., was highlighted by dance and song presentations by students and guests.
