Three NMC students receive First Hawaiian Bank/Guam Business scholarships

Hazel Marie B. Doctor, Shannon S. Hofschneider and Joana Maie P. Palero received varying amounts between $1,520 and $1,615 during the awarding ceremony at the FHB Gualo Rai branch on Friday morning.

FHB VP and Saipan area manager for Gualo Rai branch Juan Lizama said  this is the third year they joined with Guam Business in awarding deserving students with scholarships.

“This is an ongoing program to encourage students to enter into the business community,” Lizama said.

The three recipients applied for the scholarship and never expected that they would be chosen out of so many who sent in applications.

Doctor said the money came in very timely because she really needed funds for her studies. Doctor is taking liberal arts at NMC but she hopes to take pre-med courses in the states.

Hofschneider, who is studying accounting at NMC said she will use the money to buy books and pay for her other school needs.

She said it’s hard to focus on school while thinking of financial burdens.

“This scholarship is really a big help,” she said.

Palero, who is taking business management, said she will use the money to pay for tuition.

“I’m lucky to get this award at a time when I needed it most,” she said.

This year, First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business awarded a total of $19,550 in scholarships to 10 students — three from Saipan and seven from Guam.

The University of Guam scholars who received their awards on Nov. 26 ranging between $2,280 and $2,280 each were Suzanne V. Bernardo, Eileen L. Calleja, Roselyn A. Cariño and Liesel C Ignacio. Guam Community College students who received scholarships between $1,430 and $1,650 were Stacie Ann C. Duenas, Colleen R. Punzalan and Carolyn M. Sanchez.

Since 2006, the Businesswoman of the Year Award program provides student scholarships at UOG, NMC and GCC, extending financial assistance to college students who pursue professional careers. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and are required to submit a written essay and evidence of financial need.

A total of $85,750 has been awarded in scholarships since 2006.
