Tinian library after-school program gaining popularity

She said the after-school program provides one-on-one tutoring services for students who are “at risk” and other forms of assistance.

Perez said students who avail of the after-school program can get help with homework instructions, unfamiliar science concepts,  math problems, as well as guidance in the use of technology and research.

Perez said the library welcomes a daily average of 50 students for the after-school program.

“The library dedicates the hours between 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily (except Sundays) to helping the student community of Tinian,” Perez said.

A retired school principal and a retired teacher devised a work plan to provide academic support for the students that is presented in a personal setting, she added.

Perez said sometimes, teachers fail to reach out to  students who are struggling academically.

“These struggling students eventually become the schools’ underperforming data,” Perez said.

The Tinian library has three staff members,  two of them former teachers who volunteer to help guide, coach, encourage and help motivate students to develop a study habit that can support life-long learning.

Perez said the library staff and volunteers provide support to students and help teachers and students cope with the main challenge they face each day — having so little time and so much to do.

“The volunteers hope to make a difference in the lives of the students they serve,” Perez said.
