Tinian payment scheme self-serving, says resident

The municipal government’s failure to remit employer’s contributions to the Retirement Fund has become a “cancer” that should be removed, the resident said.

“This problem has been here for five years now,” he added.

Under the municipal government’s proposal, the Tinian Casino Gaming Control commissioners and their eligible staff will retire this September and Tinian will start paying the Retirement Fund on Jan. 1, 2011.

Tinian employees eligible to retire cannot do so because of the municipal government’s failure to remit employer’s contributions to the Fund.

The Tinian resident said there are many municipal employees who are eligible and willing to retire.

The municipal government should also look into the concerns of its other employees, he said.

Tinian Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz said the municipal government has no money to immediately pay the contributions to the Fund.

But he said he will try to find a solution that is “fair to all employees that are affected.”

The municipality of Tinian owes the Fund over $1.6 million in employer’s contributions.
