Tinian school project may begin in Sept.

THE administration is hoping that the bidding for the $6.88 million Tinian High School improvement and repair project would take place by the end of the month.

“Mid-September is a reasonable date for the construction to start,” according to Charles Jordan, the governor’s special assistant for CIP administration. He told Variety on Friday that his office was closely working with the Department of Public Works in preparing the bid package before bids are solicited on May 31.

“It is a high priority item of the administration. We are now putting together the package,” Jordan said.

The phase II construction of Tinian High School will cost $6,882,624 and will be the largest project the administration will undertake for this year, Jordan said.

The funding for the project will come from the Covenant Section 702 and Compact Impact monies, as well as from bond and local matching funds.

The money is already appropriated, Jordan said. The scope of the project, which was already approved by the Tinian legislative delegation, would include the construction of six additional classrooms, a science and chemistry laboratory, a new gymnasium, a baseball field and a rubberized track and field.

The construction of a seven-lane Olympic size swimming pool is also being considered, Jordan said. He said a 60-day timetable is given for the bidding, followed by a 30-day evaluation of the bidding applications before the contract is awarded.
