Tinian urged to hold job fair

Former Department of Commerce Resident Director Norbert U. Hofschneider said there are a lot of unemployed local residents on Tinian.

“The municipal government should be more responsible to push for the hiring of local people in the private sector,” he said.

A job fair will allow local residents to apply for job vacancy announcements before the Nov.27 deadline, he said, referring to the expiration date of the umbrella permit issued to nonresidents by the Fitial administration.

Hofschneider, who operates a business, said he has hired locals to help them cope with their daily needs.

With the federalization of labor and immigration, many local residents will be attracted to working for the private company, he added.

He noted that on Tinian, most of the businesses are owned and operated by foreign entrepreneurs who prefer to hire their friends and family members.

Tinian Mayor Ramon Dela Cruz was not in his office when Variety called to ask for his comment.

His chief of staff Allen Perez was  in a meeting and had yet to reply to this reporter’s email as of press time.
