Tongan AG heads for US

NUKU’ALOFA (Pacnews) — A Tongan government delegation is traveling to the United States ahead of a court case seeking to recover millions of dollars reportedly swindled by a former court jester.

Three persons and six U.S. companies are being sued in the case in which over $20 million disappeared from the Tonga Trust Fund.

The funds given to the U.S. national, a former court jester in Tonga, Jesse Bogdonoff, were intended for investment. However, the man reportedly disappeared with the money. Attorney General ‘Aisea Taumoepeau will be meeting with U.S. lawyers from a “large and reputable law firm” before the case is due for hearing in a San Francisco court.

A statement from the Tonga government said that “the visit underlines the trustees’ concern that a proper understanding and assessment of the trustees position with regards to [their] claims are well founded.”
