At Paupau Beach, Torres greeted and talked with a large group of sailors who were relaxing on shore leave after a vigorous deployment in American Samoa, which was hit by a tsunami last month.
He presented them with “The Order of the Donut,” an anchor given in honor of their last visit to Saipan.
“These hard working sailors deserve our thanks not just for going into harm’s way, but for their humanitarian help for our fellow islanders and others too,” said Torres.
At Paupau, the sailors got a taste of some exotic food, including a young coconut after a local boy volunteered to climb a coconut tree and cut open the fruit for the visitors.
After the beach party and a relaxing day enjoying the Saipan lagoon, the sailors were invited to a sunset cocktail and dinner party at Stanley and Arlene Torres’s Garden House on Capital Hill.
Several sailors went with Representative Torres to his farm in As Teo to sample red sugar cane and sweet local pineapples.
Sitting on a small patio overlooking the lagoon and the setting sun, the men of the Ingraham said they appreciated being treated like family and that they would return soon to this beautiful island and its friendly people.
