Hunga Ha’apai is about 60 kilometers north east of the capital Nuku’alofa, and first started erupting on March 17.
Australian volcanolgist, Paul Taylor, has told the Matangi Tonga the volcano remains extremely dangerous.
He said volcanoes are unpredictable because they may not give warning signs that activity is going to occur and the landforms produced during explosions, remain unstable for a long period.
One of the first people to visit the site, G.P. Orbassano, agrees it is a potentially dangerous situation.
He’s told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat Program that the eruption has all but destroyed plant and animal life but at the same time the color of it is spectacular.
“The land is black, and the volcano is red and all around is yellow sulphur in the water and the blue of the water is fantastic,” he said.
“The color is amazing.”
