Trial of Rota mayor’s son starts in June

In his two-page order yesterday, U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson said Wilbur Vic Masga Inos’s trial will start on June 1.

Inos appeared in court with  attorney Robert Torres. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Benedetto appeared on behalf of the federal government.

The court granted the defendant’s motion after finding that the ends of justice will be served by allowing the defense further time to review the evidence in preparation for trial.

Munson ordered all parties to submit their motions and other documents before the court no later than one week before the trial.

The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service after the hearing.

In December last year, the defendant entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment.

The federal government earlier argued for no bail and moved that the defendant remain in custody without bail after playing a video of the actual robbery.

Inos was indicted for one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count for use of firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

The indictment stated that the defendant committed robbery at Rota Poker in Songsong, Rota in Aug. 2008.

George A. Barcinas of the Department of Public Safety-Rota Criminal Investigation Section stated in his affidavit that Rota Poker asked for assistance at around 4:14 a.m. on Aug. 4.

Rota Poker reported that it was robbed a gun-totting man  wearing a camouflaged outfit.

Inos was arrested after responding police officers viewed the security camera of Rota Poker and identified him.

The police found Inos with another man inside a parked car.

Police said Inos showed them a green plastic bag containing the money he took from  Rota Poker and told the police that his son was in critical condition on Guam.

Police later recovered the gun that Inos used on the roof of a housing unit for guest workers.
