Tudela urges passage of local bill

SAIPAN Mayor Juan Borja Tudela is urging the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation to immediately pass House Local Bill 13-30 which would supplement the budget of the mayor’s office and the expenses for the 2002 Liberation Day Festivities next month.

In a June 17 letter to delegation chairman Pete P. Reyes, Tudela said the $325,000 fund that the bill seeks to appropriate will be of great help in the personnel and operational costs of his office and the expenses for the festivities. “This appropriation bill…would help the Office of the Mayor and the 2002 Liberation Day Committee address urgent needs. We therefore urge your immediate pasage of the (measure),” Tudela told Reyes, R-Saipan.

Tudela said $275,000 will be used for personnel and operational costs, while the remaining $50,000 will be used for the Liberation Day activities. He told Reyes that the urgent funding needs of his office are “well-known”.

He said that in March and again in April, detailed urgent supplemental requests were submitted by his office to every member of the delegation in addition to (the one they gave to) the Office of the Governor. He told Reyes that “while some funding has been made available since then, the amount falls short of solving our needs.”
