A VISITING official from the Washington D.C.-based Association of American Geographers has encouraged Saipan residents and businessmen to join the group.
During yesterday’s Saipan Rotary Club meeting, Katharine Corbin, AAG director of placement, said membership into the association is not limited to geographers, but to anybody who has interest in geography.
The association puts together people with interests on geography.
Membership into this group makes it easier to establish contacts with businesses, the academic world and other institutions.
It also assists college students with geography-related courses to find potential employers, said Corbin, the guest speaker at the Rotary weekly meeting.
“I want to let you all know that it is available to you. You don’t have to be geographers. Anybody who is interested in it is welcome to join, with the variety of membership activities that you can take part in,” Corbin told Rotary members at the meeting held at Hyatt Regency Saipan.
Corbin became the AAG director of placement in Oct. 2001, due mainly to her ability to lure more members and find connections.
“I’ve been talking to several members of the association on how to enhance the membership. Now we have a broad membership,” she said.
During the end of her presentation, past Rotary president David Sablan requested Corbin to help the CNMI become more known in the U.S.
“Since you represent a group of geographers, can you help us, since the CNMI is hardly known in the U.S.?” asked Sablan, to which Corbin replied, “I’ll do my best.”
