United Voice for Improved Status prepares for a big rally

The group is gathering at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Tomorrow, organizers of the United Voice for Improved Status will hold a press briefing with supporters and group officials at the pavilion across from the JP Center along Beach Road in Garapan.

The United Voice for Improved Status is a newly-organized group made up of different associations of guest workers, non-immigrants and U.S. citizens, immediate relatives, Freely Associated States citizens, U.S. citizen children of non-immigrant parents, members of the business community, and CNMI permanent residents.

Also joining the group are the former “stateless children” who were born in 1974 to 1978, local residents and all others who are sympathizing with the plight of all non-immigrants in the CNMI.

The group’s public information committee said they will ask the U.S. delegation to push for the implementation of regulations that will stabilize their presence and keep their families together in the CNMI.

Expected to arrive are CNMI Congressman Gregorio Sablan, Congressman Nick Rahall, the chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources; Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo, chairwoman of the Sub-Committee on Insular Affairs, Oceans & Wildlife and congressional staffer Brian Modeste.

“We will also ask the delegates to support improved status for us – either in stand-alone legislation or in a comprehensive bill for national immigration reform,” the public information committee said.

A considerable numbers of guest workers and other non-immigrant permit holders are expected to meet at the meeting place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, the committee added.

The committee said they can provide free transportation to those who want to attend the rally.

The pick-up points are in front of Pacific Islands Club, Aqua Resort at 30 minutes intervals starting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The transportation will be provided by Saipan City Taxi Association.  Carpooling is also encouraged.

The committee said the group is encouraging all participants to wear white outfit and to bring umbrella.
