USP unveils plans

SUVA (Pacnews) — The University of the South Pacific wants to lift its profile and become an internationally recognized institution during the next triennial period from 2003-2005.

This was revealed at the recent USP Council meeting in Niue last month, where among key themes discussed were internationalization, regionalism, improved research, new technology and income generation.

Related to this is the university’s plan to improve teaching science related subjects and introduce study programs in governance, adjustment reforms, public sector management, and leadership and gender studies.

According to the Triennial Report, the university would decentralize some of its activities and consolidate others.

The report highlights the development of a “research plan” aimed at improving research related activities. It also mentions utilizing state of the art technological resources to support study and research in the field of science and long-distance learning.

This includes the construction next year of a new F$250,000 journalism program complex at the Laucala campus in Suva.
