The 509-foot Arleigh Burke-class destroyer pulled into Saipan’s port yesterday morning.
It was the crew’s first visit to the commonwealth, and they are here to join the CNMI in observing Veterans Day on Thursday.
The ship has 375 officers and crewmembers.
Tenorio said she coordinated with Ruth Coleman, Military/Veterans Affairs executive officer, for the community relation project the crewmembers will implement at WSR.
The project will start at 8 a.m. and end at 12 noon today.
When another ship visits Saipan, Hopwood Junior High School will be the beneficiary of the next community project.
There will be 48 crewmembers from USS Sterett who will paint WSR’s basketball court, clean its water tanks, trim and cut trees on campus.
Tenorio said the school will be providing supplies and materials needed for this project.
In the future, she said, they will solicit donations for supplies and materials so they can implement more projects.
She said about 10 of the crewmembers will meet with the student to talk about a career with the U.S. Navy.
The crewmembers will then join the students during lunch time in the cafeteria, Tenorio said.
