PORT VILA (Pacnews) — Vanuatu’s caretaker Prime Minister Edward Natapei says he supports an initiative by the anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International Vanuatu to establish an election-monitoring group during the current election campaign.
The president of Transparency International Vanuatu, Ivette Sam, led a delegation to the prime minister last Thursday to discuss the matter.
Sam said there were concerns about allegations of electoral fraud, vote tampering, and breaches of the Electoral Act.
Natapei said he welcomed the initiative to establish an electoral monitoring group to ensure that the citizens of Vanuatu were delivered a government as a result of a fair and open election.
He also wishes to see all political parties and independent candidates support for this initiative demanding transparency in the democratic process.
An announcement will be made in the near future about the composition of the monitoring group, when a list will be published of all task force members.
