Vehicle hits, injures teenager

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said DPS received a call for assistance at about 7:06 a.m. on Jan. 6 near the intersection to Saipan International School.

Ogumoro said preliminary investigations conducted by responding traffic investigators showed that the red Toyota Highlander operated by 41-year-old Paul W. Camacho was traveling south on Martinez Road in As Lito.

Ogumoro said just as the Toyota operated by Camacho was passing a Public School System bus near the intersection, the victim ran from behind the bus and crossed the highway from the northbound shoulder lane. He was hit by the Highlander when he entered the southbound lane.

Investigation showed that the school bus obstructed the view of the Highlander operator and the victim.

Camacho immediately called the police for assistance.

Ogumoro said traffic investigators and medics dispatched to the scene found the victim lying on the southbound lane.

Medics transported the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center for further observation and treatment. He was later released that day.

According to traffic investigators, the victim did not use a marked crosswalk to cross the highway and failed to yield the right of way to vehicles on the highway. No one was cited.

Ogumoro said speed and alcohol were not factors in this incident. The weather was cloudy and the road surface, including the shoulder, was wet.

The victim sustained multiple abrasions and lacerations to the facial area. He also complained of pain in his right arm, right leg and neck area.

Camacho was unhurt but the left side of his vehicle was moderately damaged.
