Video shop manager in copyright infringement case waives right to speedy trial

labels has waived his right for a speedy trial.

Min Jo, through his court appointed counsel George Hasselback, submitted an oral motion in open court on Friday to waive speedy trial in order to allow them to prepare their case.

U.S. District Court for NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson granted the request and ordered that the jury trial will be waived up until and including Oct. 1, 2008 and the jury trial will commence on Sept. 8, 2008 at 9 am.

Pre-trial motions are set for June 27.

Munson said Min Jo will be allowed to remain at liberty under the same terms and conditions as previously set.

Min Jo was indicted along with Cho Il — both are managers of Seoul Video on Saipan.

The indictment stated that on or about Sept. 28, 2007 and continuing thereafter to on or about March 26, 2008, Min Jo and Cho Il conspired and agreed with each other to commit an offense — to infringe the copyright of one or more copyrighted works by reproducing and by distributing during a 180-day period at least 10 unauthorized copies of one or more copyrighted works having a retail value of more than $2,500.

According to the indictment, the defendants infringed the copyright of the following movies by copying and distributing unauthorized copies of copyrighted movies “Jumper,” “Rendition,” “I Am Legend,” “Mr. Magorum’s Wonder Emporium,” “Juno,” “Bucket List,” “Waterhorse,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “Rush Hour 3,” “The Queen,” “Dreamgirls,” “Rocky Balboa” and “Bee Movie.”

The indictment stated that Cho Il and Min Jo “did knowingly and willfully traffic in counterfeit labels by making or manufacturing labels which appeared to be genuine, which were not in fact genuine, which were affixed to or designed to be affixed to, unauthorized copies of motion pictures.”
