The Federal Aviation Administration has “cleared” Sendai Airport, according to Yoichi Matsumura of the NMI-Japan Disaster Relief organization.
In an email, he said Morioka, the area of focus for the volunteer program, is also far from Fukushima Plant No. 1.
Iwate Prefecture is another area that was tremendously damaged by the March earthquake and still needs recovery assistance, he added.
Early this month, Matsumura, through the Holiday Tour Micronesia of Guam, in collaboration with the Morioka branch office of Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. Ltd. of Japan, requested members of the local community to perform volunteer work in Japan’s disaster-stricken areas.
As of yesterday, she said five from Saipan and 10 from Guam had signed up as volunteers.
Continental Airlines has offered a special rate for the volunteers, he added.
Continental will accept bookings up to Aug. 31, 2011
“We would like to entice more people to join this volunteer program,” Matsumura said.
