The committee will discuss Resolution 7-1, which requests the Department of Education to review its school curriculum for the primary and secondary schools and to include the teaching of the local vernaculars of Yap in all primary and secondary schools “in support of the dire need to improve and preserve our languages, which are essential to our cultural heritage, customs and traditions.”
The committee has invited several decision-makers in the government to be involved in the discussions.
These include Gov. Sebastian Anefal, the heads of the two traditional Councils of Pilung and Tamol, the attorney general, the Board of Education, the director of education and the principal representative.
The committee will also discuss Resolution 7-3 which is requesting the Department of Education to establish a registry of all Yapese students attending colleges, universities and vocational institutions.
The third part of the hearing will be on Bill 7-70 which seeks to amend Title 16 of the Yap State Code, Education, by adding a new Chapter 7, to provide for the Academic Excellence Award Grant, and for other purposes.
The committee will begin its discussion at 3 p.m. in the afternoon on Bill 7-27, which will amend Title 18 of the Yap State Code to establish an Island and atoll fishery and conservation zone within the state fishery zone.
