Youth senators want to attend Guam conference

“Having such experience and being involved in an event such at the Youth for Youth Conference, the Youth senators can bring back their lessons and experiences and apply their newly learned skills to help the youth of the CNMI,” Youth Sen. Jessamin Santos told her colleagues during their session on Saturday.

The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency on Guam from April 25-27.

In her resolution, Santos is asking the CNMI’s cash-strapped government to fund the participation of the youth senators.

The Youth For Youth LIVE Group, a community-based, non-profit organization created to assist, guide, and create positive influences for the youth, started in 1988 when anti-drug advocates in Dededo, Guam launched the Dededo Drug-Free Organization.

Santos said the organization has always been a mix of middle and high school students, coming from a wide range of backgrounds, both private and public schools.

In 2007, she said, the Youth for Youth Organization changed its name to Youth for Youth LIVE!, “as a way to signal that the youth were not and should not be passive in their lifestyle choices and that they too had a voice in matters and issues relating to them.”

It aims to ensure “an island community empowered and committed to making healthy choices — completely alcohol and tobacco free choices.”
