“The board believes that suspension of the zoning law even for a period shorter than six months must be reasonably justified on grounds greater than what Representative Torres has disclosed,” Hofschneider said in an e-mail to the Variety.
Critics of the law law believe that it has “inflexible rules” and involves “an impossible waiting list, relocation to impossible locations, and plans that disrupt businesses.”
“Whether Representative Torres has found substantive defects in the law that threatens the health, safety and welfare of the public is still unclear to the board at this point,” Hofschneider said.
He added, “The board is in the dark as to what valid reasons Representative Torres is arguing that suspension of the law is the only and final option.”
Hofschneider said the board is looking forward in meeting Torres to listen and discuss the lawmaker’s concerns.
