At the same time, the Zoning Board said 338 new applications were processed, with over 300 new permits issued to business and property owners now in compliance with the 2008 Saipan Zoning Law.
Zoning Board Administrator Victor Barrett reported these as he commended his staff, saying: “I am proud of the work of our Board … for their focus and effort in addressing some of our early challenges.”
Commended by Barrett were Marian Mafnas, Anicia Tomokane and Dewayne Duenas, three full-time zoning officers; administrative processor Bing Taitano and planner Therese Ogumoro.
Barrett officially assumed office on June 22 after the former administrator resigned.
With the help of his staff, Barrett said they have reviewed and streamlined the process.
“The vast majority of new and existing businesses, even home businesses, which are to be located in building throughout the island can be cleared for a business clearance by Zoning on the same day,” explains Barrett.
“Our department will first look to work with the client to find a workable solution to any issues with the code that may arise. I am looking to the businesses of our island to help us create a more workable and adaptable code,” Barrett further explained, particularly focusing on service delivery.
