Zoning Administrator Steve Tilley yesterday said CUC, which will rent Aggreko’s generators for $6 million, submitted an application for the company some two weeks ago.
CUC identified a portion of a public land in Lower Base, approximately 1,300 meters, as the location of the Aggreko generators that will supply power to the island.
Tilley said the site was the compound formerly occupied by the Department of Public Works and which is now under the Department of Public Lands.
According to Tilley, CUC had to apply for a conditional use zoning permit, which the board was willing to provide considering the urgency of the island’s power situation.
Tilley said the Lower Base compound is already paved and is expected to be used by CUC for the new generators once all permits have been issued.
“The project, as far as the technical aspect is concerned, is technically in compliance,” Tilley said.
However, a public hearing is still required, he added.
In a memorandum issued yesterday, Zoning Board Chairman Henry Hofschneider called for a special meeting “to consider a conditional use permit application” for the Aggreko Auxiliary CUC Power Station.
The public hearing will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26, 6 p.m., at the multi-purpose center in Susupe.
The Zoning Board’s special meeting will be held immediately after the public hearing.
“This auxiliary power station is of vital importance to the commonwealth so I would like the zoning board to act on this application as soon as possible,” Hofschneider said.
Tilley said before issuing a conditional use permit, the Zoning Board will look into the project’s compatibility with the surrounding properties, traffic issues, public facilities and services.
“This is a matter of urgency and we want to make the decision at the soonest possible time,” he added.
The new generators are expected to be installed in mid-September.
