Man arrested for selling methamphetamine

KUI Zhang, 33, also known as “Driver,” was arrested by the Department of Public Safety-Criminal Investigation Division and Drug Enforcement Task Force following a “buy-walk” operation last June.

DPS said Zhang sold 1.3 grams of methamphetamine or ice to a DETF informer.

Zhang, who was charged with trafficking and possession of a controlled substance, appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho for a bail hearing on Friday. The judge imposed a $100,000 cash bail and remanded Zhang to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.

Zhang was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. and for an arraignment on Aug. 15 at 9 a.m.

At the hearing, Zhang was represented by the court-appointed assistant public defender, Tyler Scott, while Assistant Attorney General Frances T. Demapan appeared for the government. Xuiming Callaghan served as Zhang’s interpreter.

No other information about the case of the defendant was available as of press time Sunday.
