Man arrested on sexual abuse of a minor, other charges

MANUEL Mark Igisair Okaruru appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho for a bail hearing on Friday morning in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Okaruru, 47, was arrested on charges of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree, child abuse, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

Okaruru was accused of inappropriately touching a 12-year-old girl while under the influence of methamphetamine.

Judge Camacho imposed a $50,000 on Okaruru and remanded him to the custody of Corrections. The defendant was also ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m., and for an arraignment on Aug. 29 at 9 a.m.

Assistant Attorney General Carmen Borja appeared for the government.

As there was conflict with the Public Defender’s Office in representing Okaruru, Judge Camacho ordered the clerk to appoint an attorney for the defendant.

According to the complaint filed against the defendant, the victim told her mother about Okaruru touching her.

She said, “I ran out and he started calling my name and he told me if I don’t let him, he’s going to get mad.”

The victim’s mother told police that Okaruru would also hit her daughter for no reason.
