Man from Guam sentenced to 20 years in South Korea

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison in South Korea for distributing sex abuse videos while he was a resident in Guam.

Last week, a news report published by The Korea Daily announced a 43-year-old Korean American who is originally from Guam was sentenced on Sept. 13 to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of violating South Korea’s Act on the Protection of Children and Youth Against Sex Offenders.

According to the report, which does not name the 43-year-old man, while residing in Guam, he “allegedly downloaded and edited illicit sex abuse videos to include personal details of the female victims, such as their real names, jobs and family information.”

“He then converted these details into PDFs or picture books for distribution on pornographic sites. Additionally, he created (and) disseminated sexual exploitation videos featuring minors,” the news report stated.

Furthermore, the number of female victims had reached 100, with several of them being teenagers.

Prosecutors in the case initially recommended a 15-year sentence for the man, however, he insisted he was not guilty, arguing that distributing videos wasn’t illegal in Guam.

The lack of remorse resulted in a 20-year-sentence as the South Korean law could be applied to foreigners, the news report said, adding that both federal and local laws in Guam restrict the publication of obscene materials.

In addition to the 20-year sentence, the man was ordered to participate in a 40-hour sexual assault treatment program. In addition, a 10-year restriction was imposed on him preventing him from working in organizations with children and the disabled.

Since being sentenced, the man has filed an appeal.

Upon discovering the news story from The Korea Daily, The Guam Daily Post inquired with the reporter of the story, who explained any information regarding the man’s name or details of his arrest have not been disclosed by the South Korean media.
