Man gets time served for assaulting adoptive father

PURSUANT to a plea agreement, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on Thursday sentenced In Won Hwang, 21, to 72 hours or three days in prison for assaulting his 77-year-old adoptive father.

Judge Camacho also gave Hwang 72 hours credit for time served which means the defendant was released immediately.

Hwang was ordered to pay $25 in court costs, and not harass or abuse the elderly couple who adopted him.

The defendant was sentenced after he pled guilty to assault and battery. The other charges against him were dropped by the Office of the Attorney General.

In open court, Hwang said, “I’m sorry, I will carry this for the rest of my life.”

He was represented by Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock while Assistant Attorney General James Houston appeared for the government.

According to the factual basis for the plea agreement, Hwang, on Aug. 23, 2021 did unlawfully strike, beat, wound or otherwise cause bodily harm to an elderly household member.

Hwang was initially charged with senior citizen physical abuse, disturbing the peace-domestic violence, assault and battery, false arrest, and vandalism.

His adoptive parents told police that Hwang did not give any reason why he did these things to them, nor was he visibly drunk whenever he acted violently.

In the latest incident, it was Hwang’s adoptive mother who called the police when she saw him punching her husband multiple times.
