Man who threatened girlfriend with sword also charged with meth possession

A MAN accused of threatening his girlfriend with a sword possessed methamphetamine at the time of his arrest, police said.

Anthony Villanueva, 47, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, and illegal possession of a controlled substance.

At a bail hearing Tuesday, Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio granted the defendant’s request to post 10% of the $25,000 bail.

Villanueva appeared in the custody of the Department of Corrections and was represented by Assistant Public Defender Jean Pierre Nogues. Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds appeared for the government.

Villanueva is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on April 20, at 10 a.m., and for an arraignment on April 25, at 9 a.m.

According to the complaint filed against Villanueva, he had been asking his girlfriend for two days to give him money so he could purchase a Toyota T100 pickup truck.

When she told him that she did not have the money, an argument ensued between them, she told police.

She said Villanueva then grabbed a sword and unsheathed it. While holding the sword, Villanueva slashed a dresser and started walking toward her in an aggressive manner while pointing the tip of the sword toward her, she added.

She said she grabbed her phone and called for police assistance, which caused Villanueva to flee from their residence. He took the sword with him, she added.

She called the police on April 7, 2022 at around 11:30 a.m.

At around 6:30 p.m., police received another call from Villanueva’s girlfriend who said he had returned to the residence.

A witness flagged down the responding police officer and pointed to a parked vehicle.

The police officer parked behind the vehicle and saw Villanueva getting out with a bucket filled with extension cords.

After securing Villanueva, the police officer saw a small, clear Ziploc bag containing crystal-like substance on the front passenger seat of the defendant’s vehicle.

The officer searched the vehicle and found a clear glass pipe in the center compartment.

The crystalline substance tested positive for methamphetamine, police said.
