THE Micronesian Legal Services Corp. is grateful to Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, House Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation Chairman Vinnie Sablan and CNMI lawmakers for providing MLSC with $35,000 in amusement annual fee collections under Saipan Local Law 22-5.
In a letter to the CNMI officials, MLSC Executive Director Lee Pliscou, board chair Robert Torres and CNMI directing attorney Jane Mack said: “The CNMI’s commitment to justice for its people is carried out by MLSC’s providing free legal assistance to low-income persons in non-criminal matters and outreach and community education for the entire community. Your support will continue to improve the lives of our island communities by helping them solve critical legal problems.”
Authored by Vice Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao, S.L.L. 22-5 appropriates $560,000 from revenue collected for Saipan, pursuant to Public Law 20-59.
Aside from the $35,000 appropriated for MLSC, the local law allots $100,000 for the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance scholarship program; $150,000 for the operations of the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation; $50,000 for the relocation of Saipan Cares for Animals facility and operational costs; $30,000 for a plan for a new fire station on the north side of Saipan; $50,000 for the Saipan Mayor’s Office for operations and costs associated with the Liberation Day festivities; $15,000 for the Saipan Little League; $15,000 for the Marianas Racing Association; $20,000 for the Office of the Board of Parole; $15,000 for the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture for its operations; $25,000 for the Haggan/Woong United for Recovery; $25,000 for the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems Inc.; $10,000 for the Saipan Fishermen’s Association; and $20,000 for the Commonwealth Women’s Association.
