MOE is asking the Australian government through Australian Ambassador Susan Cox for support in the establishment and implementation of Teacher Training Academy.
According to MOE, the “Teacher Training Academy is directed at enticing high school graduates to pursue careers in the field of education, obtain college degrees; and thus, creating a pool of potential teachers.”
Because of scarcity of professionals who are willing to teach, MOE decided to hire high school graduates to fill vacant teaching positions in schools.
A few years back, MOE has implemented an ongoing education cohort program to help high school graduates who currently work as teachers to obtain their degrees in Education at Palau Community College (PCC).
With the establishment of the Teacher Training Academy, MOE hopes to be able to address one of its biggest challenges — “recruitment and retention of qualified and appropriately trained teachers.”
According to MOE Director Masa-Aki Emesiochel, he perceives positive responses from the Australian government for the education cohort program and the proposed Teacher Training Academy.
“During a meeting earlier this week, Ambassador Cox alluded to the possibility of funding scholarships for teachers in the education cohort program and potential teachers who will enroll in the academy,” said the MOE.
The proposed Teacher Training Academy is projected to start with a minimum of 12 enrollees at PCC in fall this year.
