MVA invites lawmakers to NMI tourism orientation

THE Marianas Visitors Authority is inviting senators to an orientation so that the agency can provide them an update and an overview of the Commonwealth’s only industry — tourism — and discuss challenges and opportunities.

In her email to Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider and Senate Vice President Justo S. Quitugua, who chairs the economic development committee, MVA Managing Director Priscilla M. Iakopo, said she is “soliciting the senators’ support and active participation to build a much stronger, more profitable and sustainable tourism industry by allowing [lawmakers] to attend a legislative update on tourism.”

A similar invitation was sent to House members.

Iakopo said after each CNMI election, MVA hosts a legislative orientation/update for incoming legislators.

She said this gives MVA “an opportunity to provide an overview of our travel industry, discuss challenges and opportunities and have an open discussion on related topics.”

MVA proposes to hold the legislative orientation on Feb. 24, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., but Iakopo also asked the lawmakers if the date is convenient for them or if they prefer an alternate date.

“We would like to request your consideration to not schedule a session or committee meetings on the chosen date of the legislative orientation so as to allow all members to participate in this legislative update,” she said. “Once we set a mutually agreeable date, we will provide you and the members the details of the meeting,” Iaokopo added.
