Nakamura’s daughter hands over check to scholarship recipient

Mizora Nakamura together with her cousin Hisaye Nakamura, seven years old, went straight to the Palau National Scholarship Office with her mother from school to hand over the check to Douglas.

Nakamura’s widow, Miriam Uehara Nakamura, has established the Steven Bai Nakamura Memorial Scholarship in his memory, and to help and encourage students in achieving their academic goals.

Nakamura, who passed away on January 5, 2007, had a strong commitment to education. He was an alumnus of Palau High School Class; he graduated in 1985 with honors. He finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration at California State University in Fullerton.

The Nakamura family has been offering the scholarship for three years now to graduating Palau High School seniors.

Douglas, who graduated 4th in Palau High School class of 2010, is now taking up Office Administration at Palau Community College. He said he just tried his luck when he applied for the scholarship.

“I am very happy when I learned that I was chosen,” Douglas said in an interview. “I thank the Nakamura family for their generosity. Your help is very much appreciated.”

For the students of Palau High School, he said, “Stay in good academic standing so you can also become a Steven Bai Nakamura Memorial Scholarship recipient.”

Deadline for submission of scholarship application is July 31 of each year.
