No arrests made as police investigate fatal Christmas Eve shooting at Colorado mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C (TNS) — A fight between two groups at The Citadel mall on Sunday escalated into a shooting that left one person dead and two others wounded, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Police received the initial shots-fired call at 4:34 p.m., officials said. Arriving responders found a male dead of at least one gunshot wound, and two other males who had also been shot. The two living gunshot victims were taken to a hospital, as was a female who sustained minor injuries, according to CSPD spokesman Ira Cronin.

“(The female victim) did not suffer any type of gunshot wound,” Cronin said.

Both adult males who were transported to the hospital were stable but still listed in serious condition Monday morning, according to CSPD.

“Multiple individuals” were detained in connection with the incident, and investigators were working to determine if the alleged shooter was among them, Cronin said.

As of midday Monday, no arrests had been made in the attack, according to police.

Sunday’s shooting was the latest in a series of violent incidents that have taken place at the mall in recent years. In April, a teenage suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting at the Burlington Coat Factory. Two weeks later, the family of a shooting victim filed a lawsuit against the companies that own The Citadel mall, alleging that the owners failed to employ adequate security measures despite being aware of at least six shootings at the shopping center in the six-and-a-half years leading up to the May 12, 2022, shooting that left Makayla Anderson, then 12, paralyzed from the waist down.

By 8 p.m. Sunday evening, the mall had been cleared and was expected to remain closed until Tuesday, Cronin said.

“We do anticipate that we’ll be on scene for a good part of the evening as we investigate and try to put together the pieces of what exactly happened here,” he said.

Anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the incident, is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 719-634-STOP [7867] or 800-222-8477.
