The Ngaremlengui governor, traditional chiefs and speaker in a letter to President Johnson Toribiong said that it is supporting the president’s decision.
In the letter the state leaders said that the acceptance to the request can be a contributing factor to the relationship between Palau and the U.S. as well as the United Nations.With this lawyers of at least five Uighur detainees said that it is looking forward to receiving the Palau’s delegation responses and written resettlement proposal.Seema Saifee of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP thanked the president “for your extraordinarily gracious expression of interest in our clients’ possible resettlement in Palau.”The law firm is representing detainees Ahmad Tourson, Abdul Ghappar, Abdul Rahman , Abdur Razakah and Adel Noon.The law firm said that the clients have been brought to Guantanamo Bay over seven years ago.Palau is currently in the process of drafting a written resettlement proposal and responses from the Uighur detainees earlier interviewed by the Palau delegation.In a briefing with the members of Congress on Tuesday, President Toribiong said that only eight out of the 13 detainees agreed to be interviewed. The president said the detainees also have several questions regarding Palau such as if the country has the capability to ensure their safety and as to whether they can travel outside of the country if they want to do so.
