Ngerbeched voters petition to disqualify former speaker Uehara as candidate for legislator

The residents submitted their petition and protest to Palau Election Commission office on Wednesday.

The residents stated in their petition that Uehara is not qualified to run for office in Ngerbeched because he was convicted of serious crimes of perjury and misconduct in public office.

Uehara was found guilty of perjury and misconduct in public office on January and was sentence on March to six years of imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

The sentence was suspended except for 12 months.

But Uehara has to serve his unsuspended sentence yet. The matter is still on appeal.

Uehara is running for Legislature in Ngerbeched along with other candidates Bisayang “Ush” Luii and Felix Francisco.

The residents stated in their petition that Uehara as a convicted felon, cannot vote and his name should have been removed from the voter’s list for Ngerbeched.

The residents said to allow Uehara to continue to hold office as legislator and speaker and to allow him to be candidate again is a direct violation of the law and accountability in public office.

“Our government is a government of law and convicted criminal should not be allowed to be legislator and to make laws for which he had been convicted of violating. The violations which he was convicted of relate to misuse for personal gains of the property of the state for which he worked,” the residents stated in their petition.
