NMI-born student graduates valedictorian from US high school

SAIPAN-BORN Patricia Ana Pangelinan Sablan graduated valedictorian from a high school in the mainland U.S., and has been accepted to Stanford University’s School of Medicine.

An aspiring pediatrician, Patricia, known to her family and friends as Patsy, is the daughter of Nadine Sablan and Joseph Babauta.

Her grandmother, Kina Sablan, said even when Patricia was “going through a lot” she still excelled academically.

Patricia, who will turn 18 in November, has a GPA of 4.65 and a 1600 Scholastic Aptitude Test or SAT score, which puts her in the 99th percentile ranking.

When Patsy was only 15, she started a small boutique called Patsy Kouture. Kina Sablan said Patsy Kouture will relocate to Saipan.

An AVID and AP honor student, Patricia is also an advocate for teens and young adults against domestic violence.

In her valedictory speech, Patricia said, “The goal in life is to heal. A lot of people are suffering in silence and embarrassed or afraid to speak about it thinking they might be laughed at or judged. We have to break this chain. We need to help and support one another. Imagine how many lives we could save each day by just being kind and reaching out. I will be studying to become a pediatric psychiatrist. My goal is to help kids heal. I want to be the voice for a lot of these children who don’t have one. Thank you to everyone who helped me get through the last four years. It was not easy getting here. Take care of your loved ones. Tell them you love them.”
