NMTech partners with Salt & Barber

THE Northern Marianas Technical Institute has partnered with Salt & Barber Beauty Salon in developing a cosmetology course.

NMTech Marketing and Outreach Coordinator Ben Babauta Jr. said they signed a memorandum of agreement with Salt & Barber General Manager Kurt Ellis last month.

Babauta said NMTech plans to educate CNMI residents on proper and safe practices in cosmetology.

Soon, he said, NMTech will offer Cosmetology Level 1 and Level 2 courses.

Cosmetology Level 1 will teach students about safety, sanitation, basic hair-cutting techniques, basic manicure and pedicures, basic facials, and basic customer service, while Cosmetology Level 2 will provide lessons on safety and sanitation with chemicals, color theory, advanced hair techniques, and advanced nail treatment.

Babauta said NMTech also wants to teach more aspects of cosmetology including skincare, make up, and customer service.

“NMTech will teach on campus but lab work will be completed at Salt & Barber with actual clients with agreement and supervision of the instructor,” Babauta said. “We are working hard to have the program ready by Fall 2023 with students to go into internships by January 2024.”

He said NMTech thanks Salt & Barbers for helping spearhead the new curriculum and assisting the CNMI expand its workforce.
