NMTECH students get hands-on experience through volunteer work

THE 49 students of Northern Marianas Technical Institute on Monday were given the opportunity to apply the skills that they have learned through volunteer work at NMTECH.

Ben Babauta Jr., NMTECH’s culinary instructor and students activity coordinator, said that “Campus Collaboration” was the institute’s first event before the start of the semester this year.

The students in electricity, culinary, automotive and carpentry classes were given volunteer work opportunities during which they applied what they have learned so far in their respective classes, he said.

At the same time, he said the NMTECH campus benefitted from the students’ volunteer work.

“But the main goal is to give the students hands-on experience,” he added.

The projects included the beautification of the campus veranda, cleaning and painting of the walls and improving parking lot fixtures, Babauta said.

On one of the campus walls, the students painted a mural that depicts under-the-sea environment.

For their part, the culinary students prepared the foods for the student volunteers.

“So through this volunteer work, students, faculty and staff came together to collaborate and bond before the start of the semester this year,” Babauta said.
