STRAY dogs on Rota, which have attacked deer and humans, are now also going after roosters.
Community members on Rota were shocked to see “many roosters dead and bathing in their blood” over the weekend, Rota Municipal Council Chairman Jim Atalig told Variety.
“These killings are the reasons why we need to control the dog population on Rota,” he added.
He said his team is trying its best to control the stray dog population by impounding the animals.
But he added that the problem is not just the stray dogs, but also the attitude of community members.
“Pet owners have to be responsible,” he said. “As pet owners, we have to keep our dogs leashed at all times. Never get a pet if you will eventually let it loose and abandon it.”
The Rota Municipal Council is requesting the CNMI government to help address the stray dog problem on the island by implementing “permanent solutions.”
For starters, the council is hoping to secure $10,000 so that it can construct an animal shelter and offer veterinary services.
Rota also needs veterinary services for pet dogs. Atalig believes that spaying and neutering pet dogs will help curb their population on the island.
“I hope our cries for help will be heard,” he said.
