Palau chooses a president today

The election will start at 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. as President Remengesau yesterday issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring today as a holiday.

The Palau Election Commission said that there are 14,287 registered voters. The voters will also choose 13 senators out of the 43 candidates and 16 seats for the House of Delegates are up for grabs.The voters will also have to ratify 23 Constitutional Amendments.Remengesau in declaring Nov. 4 as a holiday said that with around 90 candidates and 23 constitutional amendments to choose from, “this year’s election is by far the most important and time-consuming election in recent memory.”He added that it is also expected that there will be a high turnout and the resulting congestion at the polls and on the road.“Declaring a national holiday on this Election Day will allow many voters to have the time they need to fit voting in their schedule,” Presidential Declaration No. 08-13 said.Off-island voting was earlier conducted in Saipan, Guam and Hawaii.This is the first time that the presidential candidates are running with their vice presidential choice in a single ticket.Chin is running with Sen. Alan Seid and Toribiong with Del. Kerai Mariur.The Palau Election Commission also reminded the candidates that campaign signs and posters are not allowed within 500 feet from polling places.The commission added that radio or television campaigns are not allowed during the day of elections.
